Adaptations to your home

Are you, or is someone in your household, disabled or have a visual or hearing impairment?

If you need help getting around your home or are finding it difficult to do day-to-day tasks due to a disability, we may be able to help make things easier for you.

What are aids and adaptations?

Aids and adaptations are changes to your home to help you or a member of your household, live independently and safely in your home.

These could include be simple things such as grab rails, or lever taps or larger things such as ramps to help you get in and out of your home, or walk-in showers or stairlifts.

Minor Adaptations

Minor adaptations are small adjustments to your home. They include things like grab rails, handrails, deaf fire aids, lever taps, simple ramps and over bath showers.

Watmos may be able to carry out minor adaptations for you.

We may need professional advice and support from an Occupational Therapist depending on the type of adaptation.

Major Adaptations
Major adaptations are larger adjustments to your home such as a stair or floor lift, a walk-in shower, widening doorways or installing ramps or large pathways. For major adaptations you need to contact your Local Authority.

If you request a major adaptation, the Local Authority will arrange for an Occupational Therapist to visit you in your home to assess what you need.

You will need to apply for a Disabled Facilities Grant (DFG) to cover the cost of the major adaptation works. This is means tested so, depending on your circumstances you may have to pay towards the cost.

You can apply for this grant by contacting your Local Authority Social Services.
